1. 6. 2015
Slovenian Wines Won Three World Champion Titles

The 57th International Wine Competition – Vino Ljubljana, organised by the GR – Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre, concluded yesterday afternoon at the Ljubljana Castle. From Friday to Sunday, 40 tasters from 11 countries evaluated 358 samples from 21 countries, including faraway Japan, Uruguay, New Zealand, Argentina, etc. Slovenian wines won three out of five titles in the world champion category, the other two going to wines from Slovakia and Spain.

The Frelih wine cellar won the title of world champion in the category of sparkling wines for their Kappelman sparkling wine. In the category of white dry wines, the title went to Chardonnay Bagueri from the Goriška Brda wine cellar and in the category of still naturally sweet wines to the Prus wine cellar for their Blaufränkisch dried grape wine.

Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé from the Slovakian Mrva & Stanko wine cellar became the world champion in the category of rosé still wines.

Finally, the tasters awarded the title of world champion in the category of red dry wines to Otazu premium cuvée from the Bodega Otazu wine cellar from Spain.

Based on the evaluations, the awarded wines in each category were announced. For more information, see: www.vinoljubljana.si

According to the head of competition Matjaž Kovačič, the acknowledgement of Slovenian winemakers is yet another proof that wine producers in Slovenia know how to make good wine and that events such as the Ljubljana International Wine Competition contribute to Slovenia’s reputation as a wine producing and wine growing country.

International wine competition Vino Ljubljana is among ten foremost competitions in the world. From the very beginning, it has enjoyed the expert sponsorship of the most important world organisations in charge of sensory analysis of wines: OIV - the International Organisation of Vine and Wine from Paris, France (since 1955), UIE - International Association of Oenologists from Paris, France (since 1980) and VINOFED – the World Federation of Major International Wine and Spirits competitions (since 1994).

The 57th International Wine Competition – Vino Ljubljana award ceremony will take place on the eve of the Wine Fair on 14 October at the Ljubljana City Hall, where the highest awards will be conferred. The Wine Fair, which is part of the Vino Ljubljana brand, will be accompanied by a rich programme, including a ceremonial barrel opening, merry wine routes, etc., taking place in Ljubljana in mid October (15 – 17 October).
